Birgimana & Anita looked solid defensively but little to nothing creative going forward. Gosling was non existent and looked knackered. Marveaux was quiet but I would expect that, Cisse had no service, but if anyone with the possible exception of his mother (although I suspect she may have her doubts) believes that Obertan deserves to wear a Newcastle shirt - in my opinion you need your head examined. Ryan Taylor had to be motm not just for his goal but a solid all round performance, if Debuchy does not sign I would be tempted to play him either on the left with Santon moved to right or on the right. In my opinion he is no worse defensively than Simpson and certainly more of an attacking threat.

Believable14 Unbelievable3

I could have sworn this was a rumours page, not the opinions and banter page.
Why can't people check the heading of this page and then we can all debate that paticular rumour if people have one.

Agree0 Disagree1

I thought Obertan played ok, He was the only player making attacking runs and his balls into the box did create a clear goal scoring opportunity that was fluffed, He worked hard and used his pace. Obertan was one of the best players out there for Newcastle. Bigi and Anita had good games but were unable to create goal scoring opportunities because Newcastle were playing with a slower build up style so naturally you are not going to expect them to dribble into box, They kept things neat which is what they were asked to do. Gosling got himself into a lot of goal scoring positions which he seems to have a talent for but his finishing let him down which is to be expected as he has not been getting into the team. It is strange you did not mention Tavernier who had a stinker but mentioned other players as not being fit to wear the shirt.

Agree0 Disagree0

You obviously watched highlights I was at the match and Obertans was less than hopeless...The chants from NUFC supporters in a few weeks will be we can stay up instead of we can really kick on

Agree0 Disagree0

Ryan Taylor has come up with some decent and important goals in recent times but is overall a very very poor player.

He has the odd game or 2 when he looks the part but I would in no way shape or form have in as our perminant LB or RB, He is not good enough and can get taken apart by anyone with pace.

Agree0 Disagree0

Oberton is a player with great potential i watched the match and he often beat two or three men while going forward and then looked for a pass or a cross. if he has some faith he will turn out great pardew puts faith into him and so should we

Embarrassing result tonight imo. Settling for a 1-1 draw with half the game still to go against an unknown greek team?! One of the most frustrating performances ive seen in a while

Believable8 Unbelievable18

Yeah butat least we got an away goal and remember we had to field a weaker team because we have chelski in less than 48 hours

Agree1 Disagree0

We take an advantage into the home leg having changed almost the entire team. That's not a bad result for the beginning of the season, especially when you consider it was a European debut for a few of the players.

Agree1 Disagree0

Give yourself a shake. An untested line up, full of youngsters and fringe players gets an away draw in a european competition, in temperatures of upwards of 30 degrees.
Remember this is the first time a lot of these players have had a competitive start for us.
Ridiculous comment.

Col

Agree2 Disagree0

You're embarrassing , 2nd string side, done what needed to be done against a very useful greek side, they have done very well in the league and cup over there in the last few season's u person. prob a SMB
TOON TOON

Agree2 Disagree0

Campbell was decent, id put him behind strolla ameobi in the order tho, so 4th down the pecking order but there is also vuckic and sammy ameobi

Agree1 Disagree0

It seems someone is overestimating our strength in depth. A 1-1 draw away is a good result in this competition so early on, 30+ degrees out there as well so not easy conditions. But i think we could have won if we started Amalifanto instead of Obertan who once again was dreadful.

Agree1 Disagree0

Yes it was an embarressing performance. If to take it as a one off performance of a team that is used to playing with each other in an European competition.

Which this wasn't.

It was a good performance because:
1. Nine of the first team weren't playing
2. It was 30 degrees which none of our ayers are used to
3. It was a team not used to playing with each other
4. It is a 2 leg match which we would dominate at home with a full strength squad so why risk the chance of beating Chelsea?
5. Our young talent (which we at last are all about) got a chance to demonstrate why they should step off the bench from time to time in the premiership

In my opinion (insert your own view of using acronyms) this was exactly the result the team needed for the team that was put out.

Let exhaust ourselves when required not when we feel the need to.

IMO

Agree1 Disagree0

Anita,Bigi,Amalifanto all showed we have strength in depth in midfield.
Thought Tavernier showed promise.Solid performances from Perch,Raylor Harper,Cisse,Williamson.
Marveaux,Gosling and Obertan went missing for lots of the game.
and

Agree0 Disagree0

It wasnt the best result but that starting 11 have probably never played together. bigiramana and amalfitano looked good, the rb had a shocker in the first half but settled in the second, there were definately some positives

Agree0 Disagree0

How was Obertan dreadful? he attacked his fullback better than I've ever seen him before and put across some decent crosses. Sometimes I think fans make him a scapegoat when he hasn't done anything wrong.

Agree0 Disagree0

Just because cisse hasnt scored in 2 games doesnt mean he is 2nd string, and the heat would surely take it out of him as he has been selling watches all summer, but the nearly 5000 partizan crowd must of unsettled them as being a 2nd string team would not be used to small crowds, well if thats are 2nd string we can blame tiredness at chelski. did every fan make it back to the minibus

Agree0 Disagree0

Person!!!!

Agree0 Disagree0

It took Obertan until we were 1-0 down until he even worried the fullback, his passing is atrocious! I can't remember a positive pass he made all game, even easy passes he messed up on a consistent basis.

Agree0 Disagree0

How did Sunderland do tonight?

Agree0 Disagree0

A-R-G-H !! And your rumour is?

Agree0 Disagree0

Obertan was one of the best players, What game were some of you watching? Btw non of the team were playing before going 1-0 down, Obertan does not play in 11 positions. Obertan plays as an attacking right forward and was the only attacking player that worried the Greek side all night.

Agree0 Disagree0

Obertans was pathetic and should be sold whilst there is any value in him
Routledge is better and is now showing that elsewhere
And bye the way ot was not 30 degrees last night I was there

Really feel sorry for Simpson, everyone slags him off yet he puts his heart and soul into every performance, the same as guttrierez, no one rates him yet he amanda unsung hero, what's your views ed?

Believable15 Unbelievable8

He's terrible backs off all the time. I'd he cared he would have signed a new deal. Hope he goes before end of window and debuchy signs -jpn

Agree0 Disagree1

Playing your heart out should be a given for a very highly paid professional who won't sign anew contract. It can't disguise his lack of technical footballing ability. But that's an opinion and this is a rumours page. Do you have one?

Agree1 Disagree1

The sooner Simpson appreciates the club he is at and realises he will NEVER do better than NUFC, the better

Agree1 Disagree0

I love players who put their heart and soul into the game but the Prem is about more than that and Im afraid they are both found wanting

Agree2 Disagree0

Seems that half the hostility people have for his 'footballing skills' is because he's seeking a better contract elsewhere. He's not a terrible player at all. He's no Debuchy. He's no Marc Hottiger. But he's grand.

Agree0 Disagree0

Danny Simpson is technically a championship player at best. He has been our worst player for the last couple of seasons. Too often he frustrates me..... He will get into a decent position to cross and his delivery is always terrible. He's fairly quick yet I don't think I have ever seen him knock it of of his feet and go around an opposing full back. The ball always seems to get tangled amongst his legs. If we want to move forward as a club you constantly need to work out your worst / player or players in your best 11 and replace them to improve.

Agree0 Disagree0

You ask me, he's not far off Santon in terms of defensive ability.

Agree0 Disagree0

Simpson has got a great cross (showed it againest spurs for the assist), last season he was better defensively than santon, to often was santon caught too high up the pitch and the other team scoring, also simpson done the most goal line clearences in England

Agree0 Disagree0

Simpson has a great cross....? Are you for real?! He just lobbed a ball high and hopefully into the box, what walker shud have dealt with. He is a terrible player who statistically had a good season, but actually, is horrendous in every skill and aspect of a footballer.
Nothing do do about his contract, he is just not good enough for the premier league. Fergie doesn't let a quality player leave for pennies.
Santon is 10 times the player Simpson is. We need Debuchy in and Danton out. Toon jones

Agree0 Disagree0

Ps you obviously don't go to the games. Coz you'd see yourself his positioning is rubbish. When we got beaten in games last season, it was down his side. Wer was he for spurs goal against us? Leaving his man once again.

Agree0 Disagree0

I do agree with most, Simpson aint a great crosser of the ball but if you look at him, He never gets his head up to pick a cross out, He hits and hopes and more often than not it goes no where.

There are much worser RB in the PL than simpson though and he does earn his wages because he is very rarely injured.

Overall I would have him in the newcastle setup because he is ok but he needs to improve on his positioning and crossing ability, Having said that he did make some great goal line clearences last season and the one that points out the most was at Manchester United AWAY.

Overall we have a couple of fringe players at newcaslte, In my opinion he is one of them and also R Taylor.

Yes R Taylor has scored some important goals but he reminds me of Nicky Butt in our Relegation season! DOES MORE HARM THAN GOOD.

He is a terrible LB and only looked the part for the first 10 games last year! He cannot tackle and has absolutely no pace. He is poor at the short passing game and his only attribute is his Free Kicks and Crossing Ability.

If Lille do not qualify for the Champions League in their play off, expect the transfer of Debuchy to be tied up in the days after.

Col

Believable11 Unbelievable6

When is Lilles qualifying Game in CL?

Agree0 Disagree0

Wednesday mate

Agree0 Disagree0

The 1st leg has already been played and they lost 1-0 to Copenhagen in Denmark. The return game in France is on August 28th.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think it is the 29th, they are 1-0 down from the first leg.

Col

Agree0 Disagree0

Makes sense since the only reason he would have stayed instead of joining us is champions league football so if they lose that then they won't be able to stop him leaving

What is happening with Newcastle Ed? Suddenly all the rumours are of our big players leaving and none of players coming in? Did we really have no money to spend this summer? We have sold as much as we have bought and really not improved the team. It is just so hard to understand when the team did such a great season and qualified for Europe that the board and owner still is just in it to make money and not to improve the team further. {Ed026's Note - I still think 1 or 2 will come through the door before it shuts. I still think Debuchy will sign and I doubt we will lose anyone. The "stories" you read in the press are likely to be just that. Recycled boring journalism.

Believable11 Unbelievable3

Agreed Ed. Southern press, not bothered about reporting facts, just looking at what might sell newspapers. We are an easy target.
We are in the market for players, as the bids we know about prove.

Agree0 Disagree0

Got to agree with Ed on this one. Tiote has said on numerous occasions he is happy at St James and doesn't want to leave......I don't agree with the other comment of not improving the squad Anita looks good and the young guys will offer more than Lovenkrants or Best

Agree0 Disagree0

Debuchy and douglas would do me :) think we got the strike force to be fine. i really rate this youngster we got Campbell hopefully will get a run out tonight! Adstatoon

Agree0 Disagree0

Think pushy pards will bring in debuchy and carrol will defo come in before the window shuts you heard it here first...the drop aka waverleys finest
