Ed why do you all seem to think that carroll to spurs is pretty much nailed on? and why would ashley want to sell him? i thought he was a money-grubber, seems like keeping carroll at the club would be good for him as it would increase the sell on value of the club not to mention the money we get from finishing in higher places . . just doesn't make sense {ed's note - because of how the sale of Rooney helped Everton. The money would enable you to strengthen a number of positions and remove a troubled presence from the team. Pardew believes the players he could get with the money would be more benefit than keeping Carroll. Not that this is a rumour or anything but for an interview in the journal Pardew says that he has submitted 2 bids for players and will wait to see if they are to be accepted. it also goes onto say how the two clubs (which are speculated to be A.V- Ireland and Bfc- Larsson) will wait until monday incase a higher offer comes in for either of these players. {ed's note - I did mention it a while ago but thought it had fallen through, but it seems that McGeady is back on the radar for Newcastle. We have bought Ben Arfa this month, and he has been paid for before people start on that! You have to look at the bigger picture, our best business this season would be keeping Joey Barton, Jose Enrique and the other lads that have recently signed new deals.
We possibly need 10 points to make sure of safety then look to adapt the squad and buy/sell in the summer! Cheers, Connor {ed's note - Bothroyd is waiting to see where Cardiff end the season, if they aren't promoted, and Newcastle stay up, you are very much in with a shout. Though a decent offer would see him being pushed out the door to you. Taarabt I don't believe is even close, QPR don't need the money and Warnock is not interested in selling him. Barnetta has an injury that would see him fail medicals, highly unlikely to go through as it has a possibility of long term damage being caused with that injury. Hooper is unlikely to move due to the fact he has already played for two teams this season, I think. Larsson is still in talks, Brum want rid, he wants a move, but he is trying to get other interest in the hope of bigger wages. I can't really see this being true as Barton said after the Liverpool win he hopes and expects to spend the rest of his career at Newcastle and unless he's told otherwise, that's what he'll do. I'm not Nolan's biggest fan but his contribution last season can't be undermined, and we only bought him from Bolton for 4mil not two years ago. Don't think you'd get two of our best players for a measly 5mil when Barton alone is worth at least double that. We will probably sign one of these this week, and, depending who that is, hopefully another next week. However, both City and Spurs are keen for cash, to be sure of keeping in with the new UEFA rules about spending no more than 2/3 of their turnover on transfers, while Mike Ashley wants loan-with-option-to-buys.
However, it is eminently plausible that any of those players will not agree a contract, as Mike Ashley doesn't want to pay more than 25k a week to anybody, especially not Bridge who is already 30. If Bridge comes, I'd expect it as a regular loan, with his wages being split 50/50. That said, he will want 1st team football, and so might go to Spurs, 'Arry is not pleased with Essou-Ekotto, hence he might be available for us. Similarly, however, he will want 1st team football and so may go somewhere like Birmingham, or perhaps even West Ham. Speaking of which. . Leon Best has played himself into the plans of Pardew, who said he had to demonstrate his value to the team. Could I also say, I was at the match yesterday, and Best was fantastic.
Finally, word on the street is that Pardew is lining up a 'suprise signing' from Europe or possibly Brazil. However, the latter seems unlikely, as our S. America specialist was one of the scouts who left with Jiminez, and is currently employed by Charlton (who are going to get Dennis W*se as their new manager). But here's hoping it's Neymar anyway.

In terms of transfers, there isn't much movement as yet. Pardew and the board met yesterday to draw up transfer targets, and from media coverage lately I'd expect a couple of young players (Gradel or similar) and then perhaps some Spurs rejects (Keane or Bentley).
I'd hope there'd be a chance of Nico Kranjcar, but this hasn't really been mentioned, other than in passing. Beckham is a no-no, he wants to go back to Spurs, where he grew up.

Campbell - annoyed at Hughton's departure.
Best - with a new striker coming in, and with Carroll, Ranger and Ameobi all in front of him, he will likely be sold.
Xisco - As with Best.
Lovenkrands - if he doesn't get a chance to prove himself now Carroll is injured, he has essentially said he will want out.
Perch - If a new full back is signed. Pardew is a fan of former mackem Pascal Chimbonda. There is no evidence for that, just a hunch, and based on his comments when manager of Charlton and West Ham.
Potential signings:
Hatem Ben Arfa - I asked Mike Ashley to sign him quickly so my shirt wasn't out of date come June. . the real reason is well reported, he loves the adoration of the fans, and is big mates with Tiote and Gutierrez, apparently.
Keane - Not convinced about this one, but he's definitely leaving Spurs, and he wants to come here. Worth a punt on loan, at least. .
Other than that, it's all complete speculation, but I'd expect a left back, a creative midfielder and a striker. Then again, I expected that in the summer.
