Let's just go back to around christmas 2010. Forget past clubs tradition, trophies etc.

Newcastle vs Liverpool

At the time (take into account it was our first season back in Premier League) we had just beaten them at St James Park and were above them in the league, we had just lost our manager (who in my opinion had don a good job in difficult circumstances) and they were soon to lose theirs and a squad of players disillusioned and going nowhere fast. We arguable have not been so equal to Liverpool before

By the end of January they had bought Suarez 15m ish and like us (carroll) with torres had an offer to good to refuse made which they accepted. So end of Jan they had 50m and spent 50m and we had 35m and no replacement and spent nowt (ok at the time worried about that but pleased we didn't panic buy and managed to avoid relagation, which may have been a gamble).

They finished the season above us despite losing arguable their best player Gerrard and Carroll playing a bit part due to injury.

We have a bigger ground and stadium, they now have a manager that still the world and players respect, look up to and probably want to play for. WE DON'T. They have a new rich owner who looks like he is backing his manager. We have a rich owner who doesn't want to spend money and clearly is not going to back any manager.

Now don't get me wrong I don't think in my opinion paying 35m for Carrol and approx 16m for Henderson is great business ( I think there are better players out there for the money, they seem to be buying young and english), but the owner is obviously backing the managers judgement. Looks like Adams and possible Downing are to follow for around 25m+ and there is still a possiblity that Enrique could move there taking that to nearer 35m.

So since christmas we bought Ben Arfa (a cracking buy and hope he returns to be as good as he looked before) approx 5m. Nolan has gone and for roughly same money with have Cabaye who i think will be brilliant , quicker and younger than Nolan but maynot score so many goals although I don't Nolan would score so many next season.

So players in so far:
Newcastle Liverpool

Cabaye 4.5m Suarez 15m
Ben Arfa 5.0m Carroll 35m
Ba FREE Henderson 16m
Marvereaux FREE Adam 7 - 8m

spent 9.5m spent 74m

Players out so far:

Cambell FREE Torres 50m
Kuqi FREE
Nolan 4.5m
Carroll 35m

monies in 39.5m 50m

profit £30m Loss 24m

difference 54m

potential purchases

Newcastle: Probably nobody to get excited about and not much money spent as we are saving it until January when everyone knows you pay way over the odds or the usual last minute attempts to not really sign anyone and maybe looking over our shoulder and relagation, although there are probably 5 or six teams who will really struggle. Possibly losing enrique, Barton etc as well

Liverpool probably sign Downing and maybe three or four other players of 10m each and will only sell the players they no longer want but none of their better players leaving.

This coming season is big for us for a number of reasons:- everyone knows and stated by both Chris Houghton and Alan Pardew the squad is small. We should have money to spend from sales of players/sky monies and ticket sales. The change in rules for players.

We should be maximising our monies avaible for the next two to four years and spend now building a strong squad of young and hungry players so over the next couple of seasons we can grow as a squad and atleast regularily challenge for a european place and the domestic cups. This seems to be the attitude of the Liverpool owner only time will which owner will be right over the next three to five years, unfortunately my money would be on Liverpool being more successful.

Over the next 3 years
Newcastle to be more successful press agree

Liverpool to be more successful press disagree

Believable15 Unbelievable13

They have spent a lot of money on over inflated british players. For their gamble to be a success, they will definately need to qualify for the Champions league next season. Otherwise, the amount of money they have spent will result in a huge loss for the club. Will the owner still back/trust Kenny with that amount of money again. No.
I don't think that Liverpool will do as well as some are predicting. Yes they've spent a lot, but have they bought the right players.
Carrol (beer/injuries)
Suarez (Started well looks quality, can he play with Carrol? Do that all season?)
Henderson (rubbish)
Adam (1 good season, looking good in a poor side)
Downing-probably (Overated, never seen him do anything worth mentioning)

Let them spend the cash, they will regret it in the long term. Slowly slowly, catch a monkey.

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree, that most signing are over-estimated the value, and also concern its healthy, stability n kind of tactics

Agree0 Disagree0

This isn't a rumour so shouldn't be on rumours page. Should be on banter site.
{Ed008's Note - I agree blame the other ED

Agree0 Disagree0

Ha ha all those youve just mentioned would walk straight into your side...
another deluded geordie. you crack me up

Agree0 Disagree0

The Problem with the level of the Liverpool investment is that if they are not top 4 next season they are in massive trouble, Players like Aquilani, Joe Cole and the rest they will not be able to give away for free because of not playing and high wages. That amount of money spent by Liverpool looks stupid, When they fail to get top 4 next season Dalglish will be gone and they will not be able to afford to buy players for another 2 seasons, Newcastle are buying only Good players when they become available not spending for the sake of it, Which we seen in targets like Gamerio and Gervinho etc.

Agree0 Disagree0

Because you are not Liverpool, you may have a bigger stadium, but in reality thats
all you have on Liverpool a bigger stadium
which wont be for long,

Agree0 Disagree0

Just a thought. When I heard Carroll was going to Liverpool was pretty gutted especially when we obviously didn't have a replacement lined up. Thankfully we managed to gather enough points to avoid a relegation battle. 35million was to good to turn down and when we were told the money would be used to replace and strengthen I thought we could get maybe 4 players with the money that would both improve the team and give a stronger depth to the squad (two strikers a winger and creative midfielder). I thought if we could sell a couple of fringe players we would be able to add a centre half who could also play right back. We have since sold Nolan whiist aquiring the excellent signing of Cabaye (younger, much more mobile and free kick specialist) roughly straight swap money wise. Gaining Ba and Marvereaux on Frees is again excellent business and I would think there wages were covered by releasing Campbell and Kuqi.

My concern is having sold possibly the future England centre forward for 35million to a team at the time wasn't that much better than us, I thought we would get two good stikers for around 10 -12 mil each ready for the new season. Early rumours suggested we were after the likes of Gamerio, Gervinho, Sturridge, Erding etc. But we appear to have either not made serious enquiries or failed in attempts to sell what is a fantastic club with great support and the chance to play in front of 52,000 fans every other week or patronised either the selling team or player with poor offers or wages offered.

Mmmm my point I am raising is would we as fans now wish we had kept Carroll and not had this supposed money alledgely being invested in strenghening the team.

I beleieve we are very weak on the attacking front. potentially exciting in midfield and ok in defence bearing in mind we conceded over 50 goals with the possibility of losing Enrique and replacing with an inferior player and no signs of strenthening.

We have a much more creative and pacier midfield with the addition of Marvereaux and Cabaye and I am sure with the return of Ben Arfa and Gosling we will create lots of chances.

The key for us this season is to beat the likes of the Blackpools etc at home and to try and maximise our points against the so called weaker teams away. I am sure this coming season we are not going to draw at home to Arsenal Man u and Chelsea never mind beat Liverpool which is 6 points. We gained great wins away to Arsenal and Everton but not sure will repeat that (6 points). So we need to find 12 points elsewhere.

I would like us to keep Barton and Enrique although I doubt it and if we don't sign atleast two players to score goals I can see them both still wanting to leave and for that I can't blame them. Why should enrique stay when he can see the club is not showing ambition to make the next step of at least challenging for europe and the domestic cups.

I hope I am wrong but will be disappointed if having sold Carroll with his potential we will end up with players like Bothroyd, Carlton Cole or Long as our main strikers. If this is the case it could be a long and frustrating season because defensively we won't keep many clean sheets which means goals will be a premium to gain points in the games we really need to win.

Believable10 Unbelievable2

Mate its the 7th of july we got nearly 2months of transfer season to go patience is a virtue my friend we will get sum players just chill (WelshToon)

Agree0 Disagree0

Boring you may of well wrote this is second rate french

Agree0 Disagree0

Hope you are right Welshtoon.

Supported the Toon for 45 years would be nice to see us win something one day

Agree0 Disagree0

Transfers aside, where we will pick up these points that we supposedly won't get against bigger sides (I don't really know why?) will be the home games we lost last season against the likes of Blackpool, Stoke, Blackburn and the draws against Wigan, Fulham, Bolton and West Brom - not to mention the points dropped in the last minute against Spurs and Sunderland.

Oh god here we go again, Harry redknapp "likes" collocini, is anyone safe here?

Believable3 Unbelievable5

If there is any truth to it.... as much as I thought Colo had a good season, he is 29 or 30, gets caught for pace against quick forwards, and is on around 90K a week.... if Harry was willing to give us Bassong back I dont think it would be a bad move by us at all

Replacements for Enrique:

Walker(Tottenham) 7m was great on loan at Villa.
Ridgewell(Birmingham) 3m good but got his team relegaited.
Robinson(Liverpool) + Enrique deal very good and young.
Bridge(Man City) 4m dosen't look like he's coming.
Warnock(Aston Villa) 5m good and experienced.
Santon(Inter) 8m a bargain if we buy him and he's only 20

Replacements for Barton:

Ferguson(Birmingham) 3m good but again got his team relegaited and too old.
Reo-Coker(Free agent) free good and very tough
Krancjer(Tottenham) 8m good but I would not spend that much money on him.
Ireland(Aston Villa) 6m good.
Bentley(Tottenham) 5m a wantaway and would be good.
Gibson(Man United) 5m good but still not good enough.

Boys in Black and White

Believable4 Unbelievable8

D.Santon is a right back. (WelshToon)

Agree0 Disagree0

Santon can play left back but he prefers right. Walker on the other hand, HES ALL RIGHT

Agree0 Disagree0

Santon would cost more then that krancjer cost spurs "mil and done nuthing so should be cheap and he is good enough proved it at pompy bentley rejected us for bham last year and gibson is nt good enough and is wanted by the mackems reo coker would be good chris the toon

Agree0 Disagree0

Ridgewell would be great, Birminghams defence was watertight last season if was their lack of scoring got them down not their defending. The list of replacements for Barton tbh i would not want any of them, Gibson and Kranjcar have potential maybe, Defo not the rest.

Long isn't any better than best for me, really frustrating coz we really are about 4 or 5 signings away, spending say £20mil tops from challenging for uefa spot and we have loads that simply aren't good enough ie perch, smith, routledge, lovenkrands, ranger that would free up wages n bring in a little money. Bring in barnetta 5 mil, Sturridge, 8/10 mil, guardado 4 mil, upson and reo Coker for back up free.

Believable3 Unbelievable4

I think Long is a lot better, but not a #9. Remember his Prem strikes were when he was 19 - 21 yrs old, he produced 10 assits last year and Best never scored as many goals at any level in a season.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think your way out if you think best is just as good as long, long is a very good young player, best is a very good championship striker, but not on the mark in the prem, they both needs to swap leagues and they will both be great :)

Royals - Long bids not enough
Posted: 7th July 2011
Striker will stay put if a suitable bid fails to materialise
Reading have received bids for highly-rated striker Shane Long, but insist they have fallen well short of their valuation.
A number of offers have been put to the Royals, but they are reluctant to part with the Republic of Ireland international for less than they believe he is worth.

Reports suggest they are holding out for at least £7million, while it has been claimed that it may take as much as £10million to force their hand.

Newcastle are known to be among those chasing Long's signature, and are understood to have put a cash-plus-Leon Best package on the table.

That would not appear to be enough to tempt Reading into a sale, with the Championship club adamant that they have yet to be offered suitable terms for a player who scored 21 goals in the Championship last season.

"We have had a lot of interest - strong interest in Shane and we've anticipated that, " director of football Nick Hammond told the Reading Post.

"We've had offers for the player, but nowhere near the levels that are going to tempt us to do business."

Oh, and 6 players from the first team leave your club at the end of last season. Now you can take their replacements. The squad is short... again.

Got a bad feeling about transfer window after being linked with the likes of gameiro, gervinho, sturridge etc reality kicks in and we end up with Shane long

Shane Long is a decent striker (better than the rubish that the scum keep posting, ie Heskey etc).

Was talking to a reporter from the journal yesterday (not sports, but season ticket holder for 30 odd years and is always clued up) not really sure of who else is coming in, French kids may surprise, fully expects Enrique, Barton etc to be away last few days of the window. Nzogbia playing clubs off to bump up wages (surprise), most new signings will be unknowns from the continent bought with a view of having good potential re sale value.

How frustrating is this? After all weve been linked with (and although just a paper rumour) - Shane Long £5m + Best. And IF Enrique goes, replace with Taylor from Swansea? Why the fixation with unproven Championship players. Just for cheap wages? The Mackems will be on the banter page in their 10's at this rumour If this comes off, I hope that we have another MAIN striker lined up. But why spend £5m for someone to sit on the bench?
Unproven French and championship players is a gamble if we aren't going to bring in players with big game experience. Last Point- Lambias saying that decent money will be kept back for January window....WHY? Is the Club unsure aswell that this gamble will work and we will then really need a couple of big players. Psycho

Believable8 Unbelievable2

You do realise that the Mackems have just spent £12m on an unproven Championship player who scored about 1/5 the amount of goals as Shane Long last season don't you?

Agree0 Disagree0

What happens in January and you are near the bottom of the table, are decent or quality players going to come to you? that is the question.

Agree0 Disagree0

He is saying keep money till january so they dont spend anything In january he will say, no decent signings to be had we will keep the money PLUS whoever else we sell for the summer Ashley, Lambias and Puppet Pardew please all GET OUT OF OUR CLUB

Agree0 Disagree0

I hope it's Rondon, although unproven in the Prem the lad is a beast and will score us goals. He'll cost us 12 mil but his sell on could be massive

Agree0 Disagree0

You seem concerned that mackems wil be all over us for trying to sign Long, for 5m+ best, who banged them in last season and looked a busy and tidy player, when they have spent a rather large dollop on Whickam, who didn't bother challenging for top scorer in the league last year as far as i know.I guess some people still crave big name, and money, signings like Owen, Luque and Boumsong, surefire success stories

Agree0 Disagree0

The SMB latest signings would not have got near our first team.....So keep the faith

Agree0 Disagree0

The mackems paid £8 mill for their unproven striker, but at least they have a proven striker and are still after purchasing another one which will give them 4 to choose from. And where is all the cash promised? Another back pocket full for Ashley

Agree0 Disagree0

Its just 1 big game to keep the fans interested. We will spend nothing in Jan

shane long is a decent player , but just as good as leon best , he will not take the club foward and we will just turn into fulham , never near relegation but never doing out

Believable5 Unbelievable3

Long is better than Best, considerably better as an all round player actually.. and where exactly do you think we are aiming for?.. Fulham are in the Europa, have been there or thereabouts the past few seasons.. anyone that thinks we re breaking into the top 6, or even maybe 8 for a couple more seasons is kidding themselves

KRTOON

Agree0 Disagree0

I gotta agree in part we will not be serious contenders with in the next 5 years thats for sure but i feel we'll be slightly above Fulham flirting with europe regularly and occaisionally actually sneaking in too

Agree0 Disagree0

Long is better than Best. Long has been getting progressively better over the last few seasons and I remember when Reading were in the Prem he played quite a lot for them and looked decent. He has played 20 odd times for Ireland (picked over Best) and scored more goals last season in the Championship than Best did in 3 and a half seasons with Coventry and Newcastle. I'd much rather have Long any day.

Secondly, I for one would love to be where Fulham are next season. Top ten. Europe. That's what we are after and if anyone thinks we are going to do better than that they may as well not bother watching next season. I would love to see it happen but come on, lets be realistic

Agree0 Disagree0

You mean Fulham who went to the Europa league final and are in it again if that's what you call nout then you are clueless.

Believable12 Unbelievable3

Goodness me i hope not

Agree0 Disagree0

Some people just dont have a clue what theyre talking about....

Shane Longs Record, Last Four Seasons
Pld 52 Goals 27 Assists 10
Pld 24 Goals 14 Assists 2
Pld 18 Goals 9 Assists 2
Pld 10 Goals 6 Assists 3 (PREM)

Total
Pld 104 Goals 56 Assists 17

Leon Bests Record, Last Four Seasons
Pld 10 Goals 6 Assists 0 (PREM)
Pld 32 Goals 9 Assists 5
Pld 19 Goals 4 Assists 1
Pld 31 Goals 8 Assists 3

Total
Pld 92 Goals 27 Assists 9

Thats without even going into the all round game, no comparison, Long is in a different league to Best.

Best is a typical out and out striker, doesnt hold the ball up well, not great in possession or in the air for long balls, any game last season he featured in would tell you that, although fair play he got a few goals, think people forget 3 of the 6 were in one game though.

Shane Long is two footed, very strong in the air for his height, an absolute workhorse with much better ball retention then Best, very good in possession, like to run at defenders.. need I go on?

If theres any truth to that rumour of a swap deal with a bit of cash, its well worth doing... this coming from an Irishman who knows both players very well, theres no comparison

KRTOON

Agree0 Disagree0

Great post. Couldn't agree more.

Fair play to Best for giving it a crack last season but he isn't good enough. Long will be.
