maybe they found something in medical, the Chronicle seems to suggest he passed that. The only other thing can be visa/work permit issues. Though again, press indicated that Utd had sought re-assurances about this before proceeding with the transfer.
Maybe they found something which concerns the age thing? that's speculation on my part but could be anything really.

Visa was submitted on July 22nd but FA cannot convene a meeting until July 30th at the earliest. Medical, fee, compensation all ok visa is only hold up.

even if we make more signings a less than mediocre season would beat my expectations. Mclaren needs a good six months bedding in his system and changing the squad. We can't even give away the likes of Williamson, in 12 months we lose a lot of senior players which will free up spots. I think this will be a slow burn, I don't expect anymore signings this window.

Speculation of new signings has been rife
even from SC himself, he has a great opportunity to assemble a good team & perhaps still will.
I think with not selling anyone they have been caught in the headlightds and as per usual Ashley will not release funds from the 50m he received up front from TV
Let's hope I am wrong because without 2/3 more quality players Newcastle will once again struggle.
