How can Perch start ahead of a class player like Anita? Perch cannot play football one iota. Anita can do everything Perch does, yet he can pick a pass, he has a degree of imagination about him. Perch does not!

But I have got to admit it was nice to see out attractive style of attacking football again. where Cisse is stranded up field all alone, the Sissoko bombs up to try to support him. meaning two Toon players against 5-6 defenders. plus we can't even find them with a pass!! Hang on that's then norm for us this season leaving two up front completely stranded!

Well, we are lucky to only be two goals behind, could have been much worse. in hindsight maybe 5-2 (at the least), let's see how much worse the second leg will be!

Nice to see the return of Steve 'ive just hand balled and it looks like I've been shot' Taylor! person!

We are are bad bad team right now. and I can't see improvement!

Believable10 Unbelievable7

Nice confidence booster for the lads there

Agree4 Disagree7

Perch was doing a great job.

He was putting him boom boom tackles in on Gaitan & co.

Either you did not watch the game, or you are a Sunderland fan.

Agree6 Disagree8

But its true! Stanton might have lost us the game, Taylor has lost us the tie!

We started well, then scored a great goal then sat back and got deeper and deeper into our own half. Pardew was supposed to be taking us forward, not backwards. I have said before, we don't seem to have a style of play, some of our players don't seem to know what to do when they have the ball and end up just passing back to Krul. TBH I can't see us winning against Fulham, could be even closer to the bottom 3 after this weekend

Agree8 Disagree2

I watched the game and I am a newcastle fan!

i observed Perth recklessly sithe down a benfica playing resulting in a yellow card not even 25 minutes in to the game. Headless chicken comes to mind!

And why does a fans honest opinion need to boost the lads confidence! if they think they did well then i'm sure they'll have all the confidence they need. but I don't think they will personally! and i'm sure all their wages this week will keep them happy. so once again why should I boost confidence? Let the players give me someting to be confident about perhaps!

Agree10 Disagree2

I can not think of one team in prem who passes the ball back to their keeper as much as us? If u can think of one please tell me. More from right side when simo and tals playing before him willo. Just before their second goal we went side ways three times, Taylor had time looked up then went back to krull, before it got to santon the rest we know. Taylor turns them, ok may loose the ball but NO GOAL still 1-1 we do time and time again this time got punished!

Agree7 Disagree0

It's shows certain players have a lack of responsibility pass it to tim let him hoof it! Not good enough in the modern game.

What started so promisingly ends in bitter disappointment. Two stupid mistakes and weak finishing by Cisse that typifies his whole season. He needs to put those sort of chances away. We need to control the ball more. We need to NOT MAKE SUCH STUPID DECISIONS. At times tonight, we have played the best we have in the whole competition. A shame.

Still, at least Gosling is on.

Oh.

Believable2 Unbelievable5

Weak finishing. hitting the post twice is hardly weak

Agree6 Disagree4

Well it's not a goal, is it? So he didn't finish the chances, and you could easily classify that as weak finishing.

Agree5 Disagree4

Of course hitting the post is weak finishing. Doesn't matter if it hits the post or the corner flag, it has missed the target.

Agree5 Disagree4

3 stupid mistakes-krul should of pushed the shot away from the box for the first goal.

Agree1 Disagree0

Of all people to blame in that game you pick Krul? Goodness me.

Agree0 Disagree0

No but just saying that there was three defensive mistakes and santons and taylors were worse I know but just saying that krul made one as well.

Poor Poor Poor we should have been 3-0 before they scored Cisse good goal and 2 good misses.
We ate not at the races after playing as well as anyone for the first 24 minutes. Krul immense Cisse abysmal he should score from them chances and he does not and that has been the problem all season

Get back try and get safe in the premiership and get someone involved who knows about football

Believable9 Unbelievable0

I can't believe how you can blame Pardew for this?

Benfica have not been beaten at home since November and are unbeaten in the league all season!

We have matched them mostly and 2 silly mistakes have cost us goals!

Get behind the team!

There are some fickle fans!

Agree10 Disagree5

Fickle wake up man We are just not good enough Not beaten forget it if Cisse had put away his other 3 great chance we would have won
S. ing your pants until the last game of the season and if & when we go down you will still be making excuses

Agree3 Disagree4

Why is that Sunderland fan 'Jeez' on our page.

Oh that's right, he is secretly a Newcastle supporter.

He is bored of Sunderland. LOLL.

Agree2 Disagree1

If Benfica had put away their chances it would have been 8-3 to them. How can you blame Cisse? Pardews tactics of get a goal and sit back is to blame as well as Taylor, who is just as bad as Williamson at times, the only difference is Taylor makes it look funny.

Agree2 Disagree0

Santons mistake was worse than taylors

Agree1 Disagree1

Newcastle will win second leg 2 nill and I'm a sunderland fan. I am hoping for newcastle to win Europa (smogs got to the final its possible) and then get relegated because of the distraction. In doing so saving sunderland from relegation.

1st half musings:
Played well for first 10 minutes but dropped off way to far against their attackers and were panicking towards the end of half.

Krul, flapped at a couple and is worrying to watch when he punches shots away.
Cabbage, what can I say other than a complete waste of time him playing. Not defensive enough to tackle cleanly and is woeful passing forward.
Sissoko, needs to link up with Cisse more, he's drifting too far back imo.

More pressing and sharper passing needed 2nd half.

Come on the Toon!

If Pardew can mastermind a draw nevermind a win out of this game, I will never say a bad word about him again.

This is his biggest test as Newcastle manager to date.

Benfica are Titans, but I'm keeping the faith.

I would love to see a result here for ourselves and for the gaffer.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

He is hopeless and we will tread water as long as he is manager

Elemntary mistakes get some decent players Fulham Blunderland loss and we are down

NUFC (4-2-3-1) v #Benfica: Krul; Simpson, Taylor, Yanga-Mbiwa, Santon; Perch, Cabaye (c); Marveaux, Sissoko, Gutierrez; Cisse

It is up to Simpson, Marveaux and Gutierrez to give us a good game I reckon, the rest of the team looks strong to me.

Glad to see Perch ahead of Anita, Anita was tame against Man City.

Marveaux is a bold selection, shows Pardew is chasing an away goal.

It would be nice if Gutierrez did not get clammed up for one game, and could just play some nice clean football with some crisp passing and through balls.

Simpson needs to producing something when he supports going forward, he always panics and tries to cross as soon as he gets the ball, which normally ends up back with the other team. If Simpson has learned anything from Debuchy he will take the ball forward and try cutting the ball back for someone in space.

We will get mauled if we play highball against Benfica, this team play like Barcelona.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Benfica are a good team but in no way do they play like Barcelona. Celtic managed to keep Benfica at bay at home and nearly snatched a draw in Lisbon. Newcastle have every chance in the second leg. Benfica don't like playing away

Agree0 Disagree0

Benfica do not change their style of play, we will see an almost identical style at St. James.

They will come out and attack the game and try to outscore us.

I just read an interesting stat.

We are the team with the 2nd highest amount of open play crosses in the Premier League this season.

I am wondering why we are playing so many crosses when we are only playing 1 upfront, never mind the fact that we find it impossible to score from corners.

So why are we playing so many crosses if we cannot score from them?

It is like banging your head against a brick wall and doing it over and over and expecting it not to hurt.

This season I have been one of the worst fans that Cisse could have.

Yet I know a good strike rate for a player is to keep getting one in every two games, that's a hell of a return if you can keep it.

Cisse has played 43 games for us, and scored 20 goals.

Still no excuse for not finding the net this season but its still a very very good record to have

Believable3 Unbelievable2

He has not started all of those games & played all of those games upfront either.

Agree2 Disagree1

To original poster: to clarify, are you saying you are happy or not happy with Cisse?

Agree1 Disagree0

He is hopeless hapless and the sooner we replace him the better
Other strikers are light years ahead of him

Agree0 Disagree3

Dont care how u wanna analyse the stats. he's been rubbish all season. FACT

Agree0 Disagree2

Form is temerary class is perminant.
Over 2. Seasons he was the second he's striker in bundersliga. he's a class finisher when he gets the service. We lack creativity at the moment
