We clearly lack leadership in he team and at the club. If we were to break our 'rules' and sign a seasoned CB and pay their big salary for one or two seasons who should we go for. Is it worth going for John Terry, we missed the boat on ferdinand. My thinking is we bring in much needed experience and organisational leadership that appears lacking in our coaching staff.

Thing with Ferdinand, he's become very injury prone in the last few years. he still probably picks up £100k per week although £70k was reported. We certainly do need to be thinking about a replacement for Coloccini though.

Agree0 Disagree0

With a player like Ferdinand even when they aren't playing they can pass on knowledge, Caulker signed for QPR as he felt he would learn massively from Ferdinand. Not sure our back four would have the same lure? If I was a young defender would I want to join a defence that goes missing as much as ours?

Agree0 Disagree0

You are right, the thing that's disappointed me the most over the years is the lack of coaching quality we have. We've bought many a highly rated young player who has failed to make the grade.

Got some good young players who can keep the ball and run at defenders Total + today. BUT the first team needs a Quality CB and Quality striker which will change a mediocre season into a very good one.

Aarons was immense today.

I hope Streete and Satka are ahead of Saylor in the pecking order.

Agree0 Disagree0

Give Pardew a call because I 'm sure he did not see it that way

Agree0 Disagree0

I can guarantee one thing. If Southampton can make 50m off a couple of kids with limited 1st team action and Ashley has already earned 35m from our academy, then Pardew will be told to play the kids as much as possible!

Janmaat only traveled with the squad to get to know his teammates, Santon's injured, R.Taylor isn't yet fit enough and our two reserve right backs are recovering from injuries picked up last season. Anita is simply the best option at the minute. And Haidara is a full back.

Mail reporting that conner wickam could follow colback to Newcastle in a 6million deal!
Would be awesome to annoy the mackems but don't think the kid is worth anywhere near that!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Think he would do well for us. as NONE of the so mentioned Quality strikers are coming. Big lad so needs some coaching (problem we don't have any good coaches )
Ashleys treatment of Shearer has blown up in his face as this guy could bring the best out of most strikers.

Agree0 Disagree0

He virtually carried the mackems to safety, he only has 1 year left on his contract and 6mil would be a good deal, he is also very young and english.

The other 6 players who wouldn't go back to Shakhtar are any of them CBs

I think Ashley may be making a renewed effort to sell the club. Just a theory but world cup hype means interest inthe EPL isat an all time high. If he keeps the club profitable then if he sells it will be based on the profit multiplied by a number (in most cases x7 -x10). I am thinking he is building profits in the club to increase the value, knowing that latest acquisitions if they work out will add further value. Also he could easily have sacked Pardew last year but didn't? Is he planning on it being someone elses problem? Just a hunch when I have been trying to figure out his behavior.

We desperately need to freshen up the defence, at least try and blood Remy Streete into the first team. Or defence was way too panicky yesterday, and the midfielders and attackers were just waiting for the ball to come to the' and were just glued to their positions, way too rigid. We need movement on and off the ball. The defence got too overworked as we don't spend enough time in the oppositions half.

It annoys me when there's talk of MYM leaving when Taylor and Willo are just awful.

I'm not trying to overreact or anything as this is only pre season, but I'm just pointing out some of our faults and I hope they are addressed by Pardew and Charnley.

We need:
1 Good and young goalkeeper who can push Krul.
1 Solid and young centre half
1 Deep lying playmaker

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Its a fair call JToon. Although I would also say that even with that Pardew would still screw it up. It beggars belief how unbelievably personic his decisions are. When Fergie started blooding youngsters he did so with journeyman around them. Pardew starts with two kids up front and 2 players with no training in midfield. No wonder our defence got hammered.

Agree0 Disagree0

JT overact because unless we get in a striker and CB the game is up
and we will spend the season playing catch up from bottom 4 to 10th

Agree0 Disagree0

Spot on jtoon, as I was watching the game I said to the mrs "why is everyone standing still and waiting for the ball, " "why so few players in opponents half"

Why the criticism of Williamson? He's our best CB and we looked a lot stronger with him in the team Yesterday.
I'd play him and Streete against Schalke Today.
Colo and Taylor should never play together again they have no understanding of each other's game at all. Colo runs ten yards out of defence to try and win the ball but rarely does while Taylor drops ten yards deeper than every other defender leaving a huge space between them, which leaves the question of why hasn't Pardew or the coaches noticed this about them or if they have why haven't they fixed it.
I've tried to think of some center backs who would help our defence but could only think of a few:
Bruno Ecuele Manga(Lorient) big, Tough and a leader who would be a great signing.
Loic Perrin(St Etienne) very underrated CB who would shore up our defence and be captain material.
Virgil Van Dijk(Celtic) Quick, strong in the tackle, good in the air and good on the ball.
Jeison Murillo(Granada) quick, tough tackler and young.

Williamson good honest defender who talks!. for me van dijk or pl experience with dawson from spurs (or both). . williamson as cover. blood streete as and when. we need pace and an organiser. . the team is not far away if this is addressed. think we still have 10 million to spend as we have only spent 2-3 million if you take into account 19 m for cabaye/12 m for debuchy. is he waiting for january to see how we are doing?. . I would also consider glen hoddle as d. o. f.?. with a good young coach to introduce new ideas. . probs get crucified for the last remark
