Use our rumours form to send us newcastle transfer rumours.

I liked that formation today. It stopped working last 30 mins or so as Ben Arfa seemed to run out of steam.

Jonas did a great job at LB where we all know he plays for Argentine, and I liked the way we had a soli 3 in the middle of Cabaye, Perch and Guthrie with Cisse drifting out left when we were out of possesion and Ben Arfa doing the same on the right. 433 is the way forward. If we had of had Cabaye, Guthrie and Tiote in there that would have been the strongest team I think we can field.

Thought we were S**T yesterday. Jonas is never a full back. We constantly gave the ball away. Never really threatened them especially the second half. Guthrie aint a winger either. should have stayed with the same team that played Arsenal other than Obertan.

The formation worked for the first 10 mins but their manager sussed it and moved players deeper. In MF they had a lot of space and our players did not seem to know who they were marking. However, they never really posed a threat to us up front.

Perch was decent and guthrie put in a shift, cabaye, first season maybe he is running out of gas? But never the less we won.

Cisse played ok but again drifted out of the game. I am sure after a few more matches he will be fine.

As soon as we switched to a 442 we looked stronger and could have finished them off.

Frustrating match. Maybe 442 with santon RB jonas LB (which I said a few weeks ago) would work. HBA on the LW and Guthire on the right for now.

We all know we need a LB and a right winger and another striker... and a another centre half... but still having a good season. HWTL

Guthrie wasnt playing on the right! He was playing as part of a 3 man middle of the field, and the Cisse and Ben Arfa where switching between winger/striker roles as we went in and out of possesion. It worked well first half but I seriouly think we ran out of steam. Espec ben Arfa and when he started slowing/not tracking back after 55/60 minutes or so we couldnt keep a shape until the subs where made.

On paper this formation looks class, with all of out best players playing - however as it was a first time there were a few teething issues.

Firstly there was a lot of space in the middle for some reason with players not tracking back into postion - however I am sure with Tiote playing this would not have been as obvious.

Also, if Cisse had scored the chip and the one on one we would have won easily. As it was there were a few tence moments toward the end but once we swapped to a 442 we looked solid again.

I am not a massive perch fan but have to say in the games he has played recently he has played really well.

Anyhow, we won game and that is all that matters and also got to play an experimental formation which may work in the future... HWTL

message to all the smbs out there who think we were lucky today...

The best teams in the world dont only win when playing well, they win when playing poorly. when was the last time a team played beautiful football for 38 games in one season and won them all? Never! newcastle played long ball today as guthrie and cabaye were awful and struggled with controlling the midfield, we had no left midfield as pardew started jonas at lb and cabaye lm, that was never going to work, although we did dominated the opening 20/30 mins and on another day could have been 4 - 0 up if cisse had put his 2 other shots away and ba had scored his too, Ruddy saved them a torrid result in the opening stages of the match

Believable3 Unbelievable1

Agree with your point about top teams sometimes need to grind out results, however we have been playing poorly for a good couple of months now. Sometimes we have ground out results, others we've not.
We were a bit fortunate today coz we switched off as soon as we scored(yes we still could have scored more after with the chances we had but we werent really going for it) resorted to long ball when really we should of kept playing how we were and looked to have finished the match off. We did this against wolves and it cost us dearly.
Its simple, when we actually try to play football we look a good side, when we play hoofball/longball we are not.
By the way special mention to Perch today, we all know he's not the greatest player but though he was great today. Broke up play very well and kept it simple.

Agree2 Disagree0

Yeah perch was good best I've seem him play. Thought the team selection was a bit odd! Any news as to when Stephen Taylor is back hope it's before end of season as Williamson was awful. Teams just sit of him and he hoofs it straight to them he's just not a footballer (even tho he gets paid for being one lol)

Agree1 Disagree0

Perch could be played at right back. starting to show why CH bought him. Simpson is away in the summer.

Agree1 Disagree0

See! not just us mackems who think you play play hoof football you are saying it yourselves. and you call us for doing it

Agree1 Disagree0

My comment was Williamson does not the whole team! It breaks down because of him. When s Taylor is in we have eleven players that play football

Believable0 Unbelievable2

Sorry mate i think we will need much more that 4 wins, chelsea and arsenal above us, and their could be another team pinch the europa league place from us by getting to the fa cup final, wouldnt put it past either everton or sunderland (unfortunatly)

Have to ask how can you say anything about backs to walls and 10 men behind the ball after the Norwich match if they started holt they would of tortured you lot

Believable1 Unbelievable3

How they are 6th I'll never know, they are a longball side, expect West Brom to beat them basing on the way they have played the last few games, sure they won but I agree if Norwich started Holt then it would of been a different result, yeah your 10 points ahead again but we have a game in hand as we are still in the FA Cup!

Agree1 Disagree4

And your point is what... game only finished half hour ago and guess what it's the smb's straight on the site talking about the toon...just goes to show you really are obsessed with nufc. you've always got an excuse, this time its lamberts fault for not playing holt? Ever thought if Norwich played two up top like u suggested they would have been totally dominated in midfield? The reason he played that formation was to take control of midfield with the extra man, which to be fair they did at times in the match. Both keepers made great saves and we was well below par prob due to the fact of injuries and fatigue from arsenal game. Ground out the win another 3 points job done end of!
