NUFC rumours:

Maiga has voiced he is looking to conclude a deal ASAP to join the Toon (source: skysports).. Personally, I don't think this will happen due to the African Cup of Nations in 2012 and we're already losing Ba up front (for the same reason) anyway!

Personally, I think our next striker could be one of the following:

Hugo Rodallega - cheap and cheerful, good record in the Premier League and still only 26! No more then £10mil - will only happen in the Summer (and only if Wigan get relegated)

Gary Hooper - Setting the SPL alight and definitely worth a pop - no more the 8mil with add ons

Kevin Doyle - a bit old then perhaps the clib would like (only 28 mind you), but would fit in a treat - prob about 10mil tops

Andy Carroll - a really long shot, considering Llambias said he was worth "f*** all", but as a cheeky loan strangers things have happened on the tyne.

Hugo is a free in the summer.

Do you only watch British football? I agree with you that bringing on another player that will leave for the African Cup is not only unwise, but unlikely. But our recent transfers would indicate we will look to Europe for our new additions. Which is wise if the prices you quoted are anywhere near accurate. 10m for Doyle? or 8m for a player (Hooper) lighting it up in a sub par league. Its not i don't think your list is a good one, i like some of these guys (don't want AC back however), but there is far more value to be had outside England. Domestic transfer fees are way over the top and for 10m you could find far more quality than Rodallega or Doyle (no disrespect to them) outside England or Scotland. And Kevin is 28 so a little to old for the current ownerships buy young and cheap and sell on later plan. No i dont think we will be adding any of these players, unless as you said their teams are relegated and we can get them at a cut price. But i guess to be fair to you both Wigan and Wolves could go down, so you may prove me wrong with the toon putting in a bid for both.... ;)

Dont think these are up to the minute numbers, but just to give you and idea on apps vs goals return from each player.. see below.

K Doyle for Wolves - Apps 71 Goals 16
H Rodallega for Wigan - Apps 97 Goals 22
G Hooper for Celtic - Apps 38 Goals 25
A Carroll for Liverpool - Apps 16 Goals 4

Hopper is the main target, there is a few others, Newcastle are also tracking £10m-rated Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud, 25, who has scored eight goals in 12 games this season. (bbc sport) and The Magpies are confident of securing one notable signing in the January transfer window. Talks are thought to be at an advanced stage with Auxerre over 22-year-old midfielder Alain Traore. also (bbc sport) so we will see how our signings go.

Is Olivier Giroud any good. Never heard of him but apparently we're interested in him!

His numbers are good, and i have seen him once or twice on tv and youtube. He looks useful, but to be fair its really hard to tell from just that limited info.
