I'm excited for Sunday, I think the lads will want to win the Derby even more after Thursday, for the fans. Cisse was very passionate and his attitude essay brilliant. For those fans who did attend the game last night, thank you for creating one of the best atmospheres in football, it was electric and gave me goosebumps! Do the same on Sunday, and we will beat the scum. No doubt that sunderland will come with an aggressive and underdog attitude. But I hope we can really embarrass them. Nothing less than a win will do. As long as pardew sets the team up right and send the lads out with a positive and motivating attitude, we will win. Both Taylor's will be available, as will Ben arfa who will give rose a hell of a time. Tiote, santon remain out while I think debuchy could come back from injury.
Ameobi looked very Sharp against benfica and fulham, but I'm not sure he should start. i'd rather us play 4231 because I don't want us to be too open.
Lineup:
4-2-3-1
Krul

Debuchy/Simpson
Taylor
Mbiwa
Haidara

Cabaye
Anita

Ben Arfa
Sissoko
Gouffran

Cisse

That attack there is mouth watering, so I hope we tear them apart.

Believable6 Unbelievable1

Ameobi looked sharp? Is this a joke?

I can remember Sissoko sprinting down the right whilst Ameobi moved towards the box at walking pace.
If the ball hadn't deflected off the defender we wouldn't of scored so Don't say he did well on the goal.

No team in the top ten of the EPL would have him, the fact that he gets in our first team shows we are not strong enough to compete for a place in the top six.

Love it how mackems joking about us not winning a trophy in 50 years, even though we've won more major trophies than them!

Believable7 Unbelievable1

We havn't they have more league titles than us

Agree1 Disagree4

No but we've won more major trophies (European cups, league cups and FA cup)

I am so proud of what this club has achieved and I belive pardew is the right man to bring us forward. Every single player playing last night looked devastated but all played with passion and pride wearing those black and white stripes

Well I have enjoyed our european nights, there will be no trophy this season, but look, we can now concentrate on trying to get top 10 and smash the mackems. We tried our best, but hey, this benfica side are one of the best in the world, haven't lost in 36 have beat man u. we got the hardest draw, but we gave it our all but it wasn't enough
Proud to be supporter of Newcastle United
Geordie Moses

Believable9 Unbelievable4

Well said Moses, it has been a very nice and nerve racking experience, nail biting and heart pounding at times

But it was nice to see us back in Europe for the first time in six year (i think it is).

Sad times we aren't in next year, but its less games to play, and maybe a nice league cup or fa cup run. we have shown we can compete in Europe so why not our own cups next year

COME ON THE TOON!
Watching the boys last night battle for the result has made me twice as proud to be a supporter of Newcastle United

Our run in Europe has come to an end, but honestly how much fun have we had watching Newcastle get as far as we did (minus losing to Benfica at their place)

You could see what AP was thinking hold the first half keep it 0-0 and second half make the changes and bring everything forward thinking on the pitch and give it your all.

Still happy with the lads performance last night, they played for it, never let their heads drop (even with the size of the challenge they had to over come.

Now I guess we have to forget about Europe for the next year, and think about getting as high up in that league as possible next year, the main target of staying up and kicking Wonderland about on Sunday

Im still proud of the lads for how far they went this season with so few, and what they did last season and how they got.
This season has been a good learning experience for them, and with out European football next year I think we could take a good run up at the league and maybe a cup run in the league cup, or the FA cup?

You never know and we could claim one of those for ourselves never season

Can we give Pardew some credit for getting his tactics bang on? Hold out for most of the game, tire out their players, then bring on the big guns in the form of HBA and Marveaux and batter them. We could have easily gotten another goal, and with two (correctly) disallowed we could have gone through tonight. We didn't get any luck tonight, but Pardew gave us the best chance, hats off to him.

Believable5 Unbelievable5

I go to be entertained and i'm sorry but our performances in europe have been inept and uninspiring

Agree4 Disagree5

Hardly bang on considering we finished the game exactly where we started. 2 goals behind!

Bang on tactics would have seen us go through!

EMBO

Agree3 Disagree4

What are you talking about EMBO?

Pardew set the team up so that if they applied his tactics they could win 2-0.

At 1-0 up Ben Arfa got the space to cut inside onto his left foot, if he would have finished it then we would have won the game, but it skimmed over the bar - that was the opening.

Pardew can only do so much, he does not robotically control the players.

I am not blaming Ben Arfa as he is out of match practise, we were just unlucky.

Agree7 Disagree2

Pardews tactics were unsucessful, they didn't work, therefore they were wrong! It was a good effort, no doubt. but 'bang on' tactics would have seen us progress! EMBO is correct!

Agree5 Disagree3

Benfica hit us on the counter attack at pace in injury time they clearly were not that tired.

Batter them? No! four shots on target and fifty three percent possession I'm struggling to see how we battered them.

Very lucky goal but other than that we didn't really test their keeper.

Agree6 Disagree1

''Pardews tactics were unsucessful, they didn't work, therefore they were wrong! It was a good effort, no doubt. but 'bang on' tactics would have seen us progress! EMBO is correct!''

So what you are saying is: If Ben Arfa would have scored his chance the tactics would have been right, but because Ben Arfa missed Pardew's tactics were wrong?

Can you see how little sense that makes.

We had the chances to win the game; therefore the tactics were right.

Agree2 Disagree3

But how many chances did Benfica have? let's look at it, Benfica had 57% possession, 12 attempts to our 10, both team 6 on target.

So to say What if Ben Arfa had scored is nonsense. because what if they converted there chances! Some comments on here are ridiculous! we were miles behind Benfica. they never got out of secong gear against us at SJP! and if anyone thinks that's not true then u need to wake up! even when strolling around they were passing circles around us! We couldn't even beat a rubbish Maratimo team! Pardew is inept, with no clue!

We only looked like we had any cutting edge when Ben Arfa was on the pitch. and then our only tactic was "operation give the ball to Hatem"! You could see players pointing at him saying give the ball to Benny!

Now if Pardews managerial mastermind was to cling on in there til the last 20 mins and throw HBA on and hope he could conjure something. well in my book that isn't 'bang on' tactics. personally i'd call it last chance saloon! but if people wanna dream that this was tactical brilliance. then your only gunna be disappointed in future. u need to wake up!

But once again. I just can't get over how people think drawing a home game, consequently losing a tie, was a reflection of bang on tactics. i'd call it epic failure!

Agree4 Disagree1

''to say What if Ben Arfa had scored is nonsense. because what if they converted there chances! Some comments on here are ridiculous! ''

Exactly the point I was making.

The argument here was that if we had won 2-0 then the tactics would have been right.

Because we did not go through the tactics were deemed wrong.

You do realise we were playing Benfica, and they are a better side than Newcastle?

When you are playing against a better side you have to punch above your weight and set the tactics up so that the team have the chances to win the game.

Pardew kept it compact for 65 minutes, knowing that Benfica are very sharp and fast from the start of games.

We hit Benfica when their legs were tired and played to our strengths, the tactics could not have been any better.

If you think we should have attacked Benfica from the start whistle then you are clearly missing the grasp of what was going on! Benfica were/are a better technical side and if we had gone toe to toe with them from the start they would have won that contest and likely gone a goal ahead.

To argue that the tactics were wrong because the scoreline did not go our way due because an individual player fluffed a chance is 'ridiculous. '

If you think attacking Benfica from the start whistle would have been 'tactical brilliance' then you clearly have do not know what tactical means.

What is tactical about a weaker side playing into the hands of a technically better side by playing them at their own game? answer: Nothing!

Agree0 Disagree2

''You could see players pointing at him saying give the ball to Benny!''

?

Were you watching the game? None of the players were pointing at Ben Arfa or shouting ''give the ball to Benny'' LMAO, where did you dream that one up?

Actually Marveaux was probably better than Ben Arfa when he came on, and saw more of the ball.

When you understand how tactics work, get back to me.

& please, keep debates realistic and not based in fantasy land.

I am still laughing at this mental picture you have dreamed up of the players standing around pointing at Ben Arfa and saying ''pass it to Benny''. h.

You really voided any argument you had with that one.

Agree0 Disagree4

I actually watched the game, and I saw a player with the ball and Shola and Cisse both pointed to Ben Arfa!

Agree3 Disagree0

Thats poor tactics then, Benfica could have been another two goals ahead by the 65 minute mark! You had 90 mins to do a job, so from minute one you should have gone for it

Agree4 Disagree0

Marv was better than HBA?!?!

Who created the goal?

Agree4 Disagree0

Ben Arfa nicked the ball of the defender who went to sleep.

It was not a moment of creativity but bad defending.

Marveaux was running the show when he came on.

Ben Arfa was his usual sublime self, but was being marked closely.

Agree2 Disagree3

Had it not been for HBA ncl would not have scored the other night. he ran at the defenders caused panic, chased loose ball down. all down to HBA
